CONTRACT TYPE: 12 month Fixed-term, full-time contract/attachment.

JOB TITLE:  In-house title is Senior Commercial, Rights & Business Affairs Executive.

DEPARTMENT: Commercial, Rights and Business Affairs (CRBA), BBC Chief Operating Group.

LOCATION:  primarily based in London, 2-3 days a week with hybrid working for the remainder.  We would be open to discuss basing the role in Salford, Glasgow or Cardiff.

PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £45,000 – £55,000 (plus London Weighing (£5,319pa)  if London based), depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

As a Senior Commercial, Rights and Business Affairs Executive within BBC CRBA’s Rights, Frameworks & Blankets (FAB) team, you will play a key role in managing and connecting the BBC’s intellectual property and strategic interests through expert negotiation, contracting, and commercial deal-making. This role supports pan-BBC operations, including audience interactivity (e.g. competitions, voting, and charity campaigns) and industry-wide rights and union agreements. You’ll provide legal and business affairs guidance across, collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure compliance, mitigate risk and uphold BBC standards.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

Your time would be split equally across Audience Interactivity and Rights, Frameworks & Blankets.

 

Audience Interactivity:  You will:

  • be the primary legal and business affairs contact for the BBC’s audience interactivity – competitions (e.g. Blue Peter, Radio 1), voting (e.g. Strictly Come Dancing, Eurovision), awards, giveaways and charity campaigns (e.g. Comic Relief and Children in Need);
  • advise on legal, regulatory, business requirements and associated risks for audience interactivity draft terms and conditions for votes, competitions, awards or giveaways; and
  • work with the Interactive Production team, the Head of Interactivity and Senior CRBA Manager to ensure issues arising with active campaigns are dealt with in a timely manner.

 

Rights, Frameworks & Blankets:  You will:

  • provide legal, commercial and business affairs support on the BBC’s union and rights deals and operational areas supported by the FAB team;
  • you will provide advice across a range of legal matters including contract law, intellectual property rights, regulatory and policy compliance, data protection and privacy issues; and
  • you will work with CRBA experts and the BBC’s professional teams to develop best business and legal practices and procedures used pan-CRBA.

 

Although you may be assigned to a particular CRBA area and workload, from time to time you be required to work in other areas of CRBA to meet business needs, broaden knowledge, skills and experience.

 

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

 

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • qualified solicitor or chartered legal executive (would suit up to two years PQE)
  • business affairs and legal experience (preferably gained in media, production or broadcast industry)
  • experience and knowledge of contracts, intellectual property rights and regulatory law
  • interpreting, negotiating, free legal drafting and drafting terms & conditions (ideally for competitions and audience interactions)
  • legal and industry research and giving clear pragmatic written/verbal advice often to non-legal stakeholders

 

DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED:

  • knowledge of broadcaster audience engagement or promotions such as competitions or votes and associated compliance (such as data protection, consumer protection, etc.).
  • understanding of BBC editorial policy and production processes,
  • knowledge of the BBC’s talent contracting policies, processes and systems.
