At the heart of our vision are our people – a diverse, inclusive community of individuals who work together to create positive change for the world around them.
The appointee will join a young and growing research group led by Dr Nina Milosavljevic investigating visual influences on mood and affective state. Working with nocturnal laboratory mice and diurnal rodent Rhabdomys pumilio, we aim to understand the biological mechanisms underlying light impact on mood and affective state. Using state-of-the-art technologies for studying rodent brain activity and behaviour we aim to establish the key visual stimuli that modulate the activity of the mood brain centres and determine the behavioural impact of this visual modulation.
The appointee will support a wide range of research activities in the group, independently performing: i) electrophysiological recordings of mood centres while presenting carefully calibrated visual stimuli in mice and Rhabdomys pumilio, ii) brain injections for neuronal circuits tracing, iii) immunohistochemistry and to be responsible for the general laboratory facilities. This involves independently performing grant driven experiments, contributing to experimental design, consultation with other researchers, data analysis, presentation, and reporting. The post also involves advisory and supervisory roles with respect to ensuring there is a sound scientific knowledge base available and there is compliance with university procedures and regulations, particularly Health and Safety legislation. Management of the facilities will include maintenance, advice and induction with regard to the procurement and use of equipment and general laboratory organisation. The post holder will need to liaise with others to ensure they have a clear understanding of the needs of the School, Faculty and University in order to achieve their goals.
