PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £65,000-£74,250 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

 

The Principal Data Modeler role supports how data is used across the BBC.  Sitting in the Product Data Domains team you will be modelling data used by products throughout the organisation.  The team’s focus is developing highly governed, trusted datasets in the data warehouse that act as a single source of truth.  You will be part of an agile team alongside product data managers, analytics engineers, data engineers to ensuring maximum value to the BBC.

You will be working on cross-product strategic projects and cutting-edge technologies, surrounded by like-minded people.  This work will align with and help inform the short and long-term data strategy.  This is an individual contributor role that, while it does involve the mentoring of colleagues, will not involve line management responsibilities.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT

 

  • Lead the development of analytical data models at the conceptual, logical and physical level that reflects the business processes within product group.
  • Work closely with the Analytics Engineers and Product Data Managers that implement the data models in the Data Warehouse.
  • Define best practices in data modelling and database design and ensure standards are adhered to across the team.
  • Updating existing models to enhance the efficiency and performance of data delivery.
  • Collaborate and gather requirements from a wide variety of stakeholders and effectively communicate how your models support their business needs.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships where you might, as a specialist, have to manage the expectations of more senior colleagues.
  • Mentoring, coaching and support other team members in developing data modelling skills through knowledge transfer.

 

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

 

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

 

  • Deep understanding of data modelling techniques, including dimensional STAR and snowflake schemas, ideally also entity relationship modelling and/or data vault
  • Excellent SQL skills for extracting and manipulating data
  • Strong understanding of data warehousing concepts and database technologies
  • Excellent communication skills, with demonstrable experience in presenting to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Understanding data quality frameworks and how they apply to building data warehouses

 

DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED:

 

Technical Skills 

 

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to architect scalable and efficient data solutions.
  • Comfortable working alongside cross-functional teams interacting with product managers, analytics engineers, data scientists, and data analysts.
  • A good understanding of on-demand audio and video media products, with a knowledge of key competitors.
  • Knowledge of data ingestion patterns and methods

Teamwork and stakeholder management  

 

  • Ability to listen to others’ ideas and build on them
  • Ability to prioritise. A structured approach and ability to bring other on the journey.
  • Strong attention to detail
