Job Introduction

BBC Sport is now seeking an Editor – BBC Sports Website who will be responsible for the editorial oversight and strategic management of the BBC Sport website, app and social media platforms. This role involves developing content plans, coordinating event hubs, and leading digital development initiatives to enhance audience engagement and satisfaction. This role is a key member of the senior team helping to set and implement the content strategy for BBC Sport, based around achieving specific audience objectives.

Main Responsibilities

Oversight:

  • Provide editorial oversight for the BBC Sport website, app, and social media platforms
  • Ensure content quality and alignment with organisational standards and goals
  • Provide the editorial expertise to develop BBC Sport’s digital services, in partnership with Product teams.

 

Content Planning:

  • Develop and manage the content strategy for the website and app, with a balance across different formats and topics This will include setting audience-focused priorities for Stories, Events, and Sport+ teams to commission their output
  • Lead on the curation and discovery of content, including the introduction of more personalisation and segmentation around audience demographics
  • Coordinate Event Hubs for sports without significant video rights (e.g., F1)

Performance Monitoring:

  • Set and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to evaluate content effectiveness.
  • Lead on- and off-site curation, working with marketing on pan-BBC priorities and other services (especially News) on the promotion of Sport

 

Audience Engagement:

  • Adopt an audience-led approach to the prioritisation of digital content, acting as the final decision-maker
  • Oversee digital development initiatives to enhance user experience

 

Leadership and Collaboration:

  • Serve as a core member of the pan-Sport editorial leadership team, with potential to work on-duty across weekends
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure cohesive content strategies and execution
  • Develop strong working partnership with Product team to ensure Sport service benefits from pan-BBC online innovation

Are you the right candidate?

  • A brilliant editorial leader with a love of sport. You will have a deep understanding of how to connect with audiences and drive growth on digital platforms, with a clear focus on data-driven decision making and collaboration across multiple business areas.
  • Demonstrable change management and leadership. The successful leader will need the ability to build trust and motivate their team as BBC Sport continues to evolve. You will develop new ways of working, building an agile team that can adapt to changing and emerging audience needs. Change management requires open, flexible and self-motivated leadership.
  • This role is expected to be a highly skilled influencer and communicator, promoting and communicating a positive culture of ongoing transformation. They will be expected to confidently drive collaboration across all areas of BBC Sport and the wider organisation to deliver impact with audiences.
  • Demonstrable experience of strategic thinking to realise our vision, with proven ability to work with a range of production teams to set targets and then properly review output, using a test-and-learn approach. It requires an understanding of differing audience needs and experience of working with Product and Marketing teams to enhance digital services.
  • Proven and demonstrable people leadership skills. Evidence of being able to lead large, diverse teams, motivating them to do their best work. Also, leading from the front, role modelling BBC values and culture, with the ability to manage stakeholders.
  • Demonstrates balanced and impartial judgement. Makes the right editorial decisions with guidance.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to improving the diversity of the BBC’s coverage, representing all audiences and all points of view.
