We wish to appoint a post-doctoral research associate in biostatistics to support a programme of work within the ‘Inflammatory drivers of cardio- and cerebro-vascular disease’ theme co-led by Professor Maya H Buch and Professor Craig Smith within the British Heart Foundation Manchester Centre of Research Excellence (BHF CRE).

This post is interdisciplinary, bringing in data science capabilities to support the strategically important research theme ‘Inflammatory drivers of cardio- and cerebro-vascular disease’ within the BHF CRE. The planned research aims to understand the risks and basis for excess cardiovascular involvement in high risk groups including those with rheumatic immune mediated inflammatory diseases (IMID) and infections; and as such, will work across the disciplines of rheumatology (Division of Musculoskeletal & Dermatological Sciences), cardio- and cerebrovascular disease (Division of Cardiovascular Sciences) and biostatistics (Division of Population Health, Health Services Research and Primary Care). As well as being integral to the BHF CRE, this research also aligns with the National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) Manchester Biomedical Research Centres (MBRC) that is hosted by Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) in partnership with the University of Manchester and the Geoffrey Jefferson Brain Research Centre (GJBRC).

The post-holder will focus on employing multi-modal datasets to undertake analyses that address the key research questions on risk profiles, clinical, imaging and blood biomarker and outcomes. The post holder would be encouraged to develop the translational project and apply for external grant(s), including fellowships.

Through this work, we aim to improve management of cardio- and cerebrovascular involvement across rheumatic IMIDs and other high risk groups in the general population, including role of routine blood biomarkers and optimal use of advanced cardiovascular imaging to support early diagnosis and monitoring.
